Santesteban and the Wichí community
The alliance
The beauty of the imperfect, the cultural richness of Argentina guides us in the search for objects produced by artisans. We are a link with consumers who want and value the handmade as an articulator of universes.
The Wichi women and the chaguar
The fabric of the chaguar is present in different Santesteban products. It comes from a plant that grows spontaneously. The search and collection for textile purposes, as well as the fiber extraction, spinning and dyeing process are activities carried out exclusively by Wichí women. They use ancient techniques in which they translate into designs that they weave combining shapes and tones. They work with the environmental commitment that they inherited from their ancestors. They have taboos if it is extracted in excess, since the owner of the earth's resources is nature. They ask her for authorization to harvest the forest. And by legacy it maintains the ecological balance. They dedicate more than three days to this tradition if the Chaguares are far away, they travel up to 30 kilometers to find them.
Dialogue with the Origin
They shred leaves, spin, dye, weave and make.
These fabrics are testimony to the survival of one of the oldest textile techniques in South America.
In Santesteban we incorporate the chaguar with the aim of conserving the heritage of the original cultures of our country. We know that for them weaving is not just weaving, it is maintaining a dialogue with the origin. This work is one of the sacred elements of the regional worldview. It represents the union of human beings with nature.
Revalue artisan work
Our objects materialize in slow and laborious processes, which respect the environment. Each piece speaks of a landscape and its people. We seek to influence the rescue and revaluation of crafts as a form of cultural transmission of this community where everything is the result of shared effort with the community.
And that is the story we are interested in telling.
